“In the Gospel of St John, Jesus says, ‘I have chosen you’. He has chosen each one of you to be a carrier of God’s love, an instrument of His peace and compassion.”

“The call to be a co-worker is a gift from God.”
(Mother)

From the beginning, Mother Teresa attracted women, men, the young and children, from all nations, cultures, backgrounds and beliefs, to share in the work of loving service to God. Mother called these people ‘Co-workers’.
Sick and Suffering
Co-workers
There also exist 'Sick and suffering co-workers' who cannot physically help, but are linked with a Brother, Sister or Father. They offer their prayers and suffering in union with the Cross of Jesus, as a spiritual support which is deeply valued by the Missionaries.

“Everyone and anyone who wishes to become a Missionary of Charity, a carrier of God’s love, is welcome. But I want especially the paralysed, the crippled, the incurables to join, for I know that they will bring many souls to the feet of Jesus. The Sisters and the Brothers will each have a SSCW (co-worker) who prays, suffers, thinks, writes to her/him and so have a “second self”. We shall be able to do great things for love of Him, because of you.” (Mother)

The Co-worker Movement
The Co-workers join the Missionaries of Charity in seeking to respond to the thirst of Jesus: His thirst for the salvation of all, and His thirst within each person for the fullness of life and love. Co-workers, are encouraged to get to know the poor in their own families, neighbourhood, work place, town or city. To do for them the little things no one has time to do. At the same time maintaining a deep love in their own home, attending to the needs there before serving the poor outside. Those who live close enough are invited to pray and work with the Missionaries of Charity Sisters, Brothers or Fathers.

“Be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to you without going away better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your warm smile.” (Mother)

Volunteering
Most of our communities are blessed by the untiring support of local volunteers. Some communities are also assisted by volunteers coming from other countries. If you are interested in volunteering, contact your nearest community of Missionaries of Charity or the Regional Centre. We try to keep our ministry simple - it is your presence to the poor and your prayer which are essential. Mother asked that we find those who need us, looking for the poorest wherever we are, and getting to know them personally.

“It is only when we know the people that we can understand and love them.” (Mother)

It is the spirit of the Missionaries of Charity to work with simple means and to rely on God’s providence for our needs. We do not undertake any fundraising.
